Schools

The team in the Education and Outreach Department is committed to sparking a love of discovery, facilitating encounters with historical objects, encouraging interdisciplinary learning and establishing links to the present day. At the Oberhausmuseum, pupils of all ages can meet historical figures, try out tools, learn about historical sources and representations, and explore both a historic building and a museum.

All guided tours can be combined with a suitable workshop. The programmes available for booking are tailored to the relevant year group and align with the requirements of the LehrplanPLUS curriculum. If you have any specific topics you would like to focus on, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Following the guided tour, you are of course welcome to visit the Oberhausmuseum and the grounds of the Veste Oberhaus with your class at your leisure.

Guided tours for schools
Guided tour of the castle

The Veste Oberhaus stands impressively on the Georgsberg. It was built over 800 years ago as a symbol of the secular power of the Prince-Bishop of Passau. The castle complex looks back on a rich and varied history and has changed significantly over the centuries. The many different areas of a castle from the Middle Ages to modern times and their respective purposes are vividly described during an interactive tour. The depth of the castle well is explained, as is the question of where the keep stood and what purpose it served. Thus, the history of the Veste can still be read from its walls today. Further highlights of the castle tour include a visit to St George’s Chapel with its impressive frescoes, as well as the fascinating panoramic view of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers from the Batterie Linde viewpoint.

The tour takes place mainly outdoors! Please ensure you wear weather-appropriate clothing (sun/rain protection).

Guided Tour: The Fascination of the Middle Ages

What was life and daily life like in the Middle Ages? On a guided tour of the exhibition ‘Fascination with the Middle Ages | Life on Earth’, you’ll gain fascinating insights into how a castle was built, as well as into the lives and varied duties of its inhabitants. You’ll experience first-hand just how cold and dark it really was, and why heels weren’t just worn by women back then.

Workshops

Panel painting

From Year 1 | From 6 years old

In the exhibition, visitors can view medieval panel paintings and discover their unique impact, their motifs and the craftsmanship used to create them. They also gain a clear understanding of how colours were once produced from natural pigments. Inspired by what they have seen, visitors can design their own small writing tablet, thereby trying out these historical techniques for themselves.

Metalworking

From Year 4 | From around 10 years old

With loud hammering, a sheet of copper is shaped on a wooden block. Carefully placed blows create indentations, curves and textures. The finished copper is then adorned with decorative ribbons.

The Castle as a Living Space

Animals and plants at the Veste Oberhaus

The activity programme for schools and groups invites young explorers to experience Veste Oberhaus in a whole new light: as a habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals. You can discover medicinal plants, snakes and lizards, observe protected birds, learn about the importance of plants and animals to the castle’s inhabitants, and try your hand at making tooth powder using natural ingredients. ‘Armed’ with binoculars, magnifying glasses and handheld magnifiers, they set off on a journey through the castle grounds that engages all the senses.

In cooperation with Haus am Strom.
