Discover one of Europe’s largest surviving castle complexes with your family and learn fascinating details about its 800-year history. From the drawbridge to the castle well, Veste Oberhaus can be explored in a fun, child-friendly way.

Open castle tour
The guided tour provides an overview of the rich and varied history of Veste Oberhaus, spanning more than 800 years – one of the largest surviving castle complexes in Europe. Learn fascinating facts about the origins of Veste Oberhaus as a symbol of the secular power of the Prince-Bishop of Passau, as well as its evolution from a medieval castle through its time as a Renaissance palace to a Baroque fortress. At the heart of the castle, St George’s Chapel impresses with its colourful frescoes, which are among the oldest in the region. To round off the tour, enjoy a panoramic view of Passau’s historic old town and the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers from the ‘Batterie Linde’ viewing terrace.
