International Museum Day | Sun 17 May
A glimpse into restoration – get involved, discover, understand
Free admission!
On Sunday 17 May 2026, to mark International Museum Day, the Oberhausmuseum invites you to a varied programme on the theme of ‘restoration’, with free admission, which makes it clear that: Restoration is far more than mere repair – it is a central component of museum work and essential to ensuring that art and cultural treasures are preserved for future generations.
Visitors can look forward to an exciting glimpse behind the scenes – with specialist talks, interactive tours and creative hands-on activities for families. The focus is on the artist Ferdinand Wagner, to whom the Oberhausmuseum is dedicating a special exhibition in 2027.
Specialist talk for adults: Focus on Restoration
Times: 11.30 am and 2 pm, duration approx. 45 mins.
Using original objects, the talk will clearly explain the tasks undertaken by conservators in the museum and why conservation measures are indispensable. Topics include preparing exhibits for display, the correct handling of sensitive materials such as photographs and textiles, and the restoration of paintings. Why does the ‘Do not touch’ rule apply in the museum? What damage can be caused by improper handling – such as touching? And how are paintings professionally restored? After the talk, there will be an opportunity to examine materials and objects and ask questions.
Participation: Registration required at anmeldung-oberhausmuseum@passau.de or +49851396800
Family tour with expert insight: ‘Discovering Restoration’
Times: 10.30 am and 2.30 pm, duration: approx. 60 mins.
This interactive tour combines fascinating stories about the artist Ferdinand Wagner with a child-friendly insight into the profession of a restorer. At various points around the castle grounds, families will learn about historical contexts before being introduced to restoration tools, typical damage to artworks and basic working methods.
Whilst exploring the inner courtyard and the Linde Battery, the focus shifts to the life and work of the painter Ferdinand Wagner. In addition, key sites in the town’s history, such as the Town Hall with its impressive painted halls, or the Niederhaus, are examined in more detail. Afterwards, restorer Stephanie Pfeffer will give a clear explanation of her profession: What does a restorer do? What kinds of damage can occur to works of art? And what tools are used? Using examples and demonstration materials, it becomes clear why the protection of works of art is a top priority. Questions are very much encouraged.
Recommended age: 6 years and over (younger siblings welcome)
Participation: Registration required, stating the children’s ages, a telephone number and an email address at anmeldung-oberhausmuseum@passau.de or +49851396800
Hands-on programme for families “Become a restoration pro!”
Time: 10 am to 5 pm (continuous)
From 10 am to 5 pm, a continuous hands-on programme invites young museum visitors to get creative. At various stations, children can complete playful tasks related to restoration and receive their own personal “Restoration Pass” at the end. By completing pictures, trying out retouching techniques and reassembling “broken” objects, restoration techniques are taught in a clear and age-appropriate way. At the same time, the dangers to works of art are addressed in a playful manner: the aim is to recognise and combat harmful light, dirt and animal “pests” such as woodworm, silverfish and moths.
Participation: no booking required
